harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

martin lewis, the insane house kid from berlin is breaking bad with his new and massive “rewind ep” on freebase records. with his first strike “believer” he delivers a flat footed house banger with a grumpy bassline, flavoured with an hypnotizing vocal sample. the second track “ breaking bad”, a genuine groove tool, is also influenced by martins garage credo. sublime melody riffs are competing with a wiggling bassline. tuff city kids, aka gerd janson and phillip lauer come up with two mind- boggling remixes of “believer”. at the “acid remix” they take out their breaky 90s acid drumset. this one is dry, jacking and sophisticatedly tribal. the “tuff city kids remix” starts with desert- dry acid elements which grow up to an uplifting acid soundwall. a true “jack in the box”.

bait & switch returns on sop with perlenspiel, a big summer smasher which is well-stocked with real strings, pianos & harp-liked sounds rotating on a dirty driving bassline. on top there are two massive interpretations by no less than david keno and schlepp geist.

for the second instalment from quantum entanglement we delve into the misty past, a time when moving parts ruled the dance, when the power of the night rested on a needle and a bassline, and before cdjs calculated the bpm for you…you had to touch things, buy things, and the bassline ruled over all. acid thunder, a classic by fast eddie, was the first dance record i ever bought. it was important. the guy who sold it to me, at the time a spotty school kid in his school uniform, was called john stapleton, and the shop was sidetrax in bristol.

after quenums debut album, the richly textured and atmospheric masterpiece * face to face*, serialism prepares to release a striking remix package featuring three distinct voices in electronic music. * basic solution*s raw fluid energy is encased in a pulsing, staccato framework by cesare vs disorder as the meandering bassline emerges and gives way to the original distorting synth line. 5am is first given a more pumping dancefloor sheen by tiefschwarz and next a typically epic and mindbending journey from mathew jonson. lastly frank haag delivers a spooky rework of * ritual* that tightens the groove into a rolling hypnotic head trip that will also move the floor.

with litote ep, torrebros (numoment recordings / komplex de deep) signs here 2 tracks techno oriented. while part i integrates an organ hypnotic groove, part ii approaches an acid feeling by a heady bassline. borrowed identity (mistress recordings / quintessentials) proposes a catchy remix of part ii with the adding of a subtle vocal loop.

the us producer recently joined the ranks of talent residing in berlin and its evident the european techno capital is having a subtle sway on his sound on the basis of this apotheke ep, most notably the title track. theres a sense of driving momentum wedged deep in the sonic dna of this track, complemented well by a low slung bassline and airy synth melodies. elsewhere huertas sometime studio sparring partner urulu adds some percussive flex to the pulsating swing set, whilst kingsleys groove swerves the sound back towards deeper house and is apparently named in honour of a friends cat. glenn astro of the tartelet crew ends the release with a wonderfully bumping take on the track.

back from a brief hiatus from solo output, lee curtiss follows up the masterfully naughty lunatic fringe ep with another heavy dose of dancefloor debauchery for own imprint visionquest. showcasing his undeniable flair for libidinous club music with a hint of the unusual, lee takes time out from producing his upcoming album to deliver two killer originals for the ride ep. a­-side > drink tickets< is a suitably dusky and contorted trip with a growling modulated bassline, pseudo-sinister vocal and kinetic groove while b­-side > dancing girls< , a collaboration with his chicago partner in crime, nick bassett­ is a simmering hypnotic summertime affair with a filtered 90s feel and dirty funk bassline combined with sonically sophisticated detail

the first vinyl release of young berlin-based label lenient tales opens up the stage to young dresdner jonas woehl and his melodic-driven approach to emotional dance music. the vinyl four track ep opens up with the pt. 2 version of the place, evolving the beatless ambient frame of the pt. 1 version of woehls debut album white sheets into a dark forceful piece, echoing around the vocals of locoto and supported by a massive bassline, that dances with a pair of viciously crisp hi-hats and claps.

mike wall has become a regular guest at the our club, the suicide circus, and this is for a reason. his sets are banging, and so are his productions. when rain falls on a1 is a techno monster with a daf-influenced bassline ripping it. the black chamber on a2 comes along as a dark and spooky tune with lots of playful sounds in it. on the b-side the black chamber is being turned into a superfunctional and effective dancefloor weapon by samuel l. session in his remix.

maeve label honcho the drifter and co-emperor of the permanent vacation kingdom, benjamin fröhlich, team up for some rascal business. always quick to pull the sling shot out of the back pocket and hit you right between the eyes, the original version of -waterville- is full of hazy melodies, washed out bells and quirky arpeggios backed up with concrete drums for some extended dancefloor meditation. while the high tide mix wraps things up a bit with some more prominent drums and a little extra spice on the bassline. mysterious uk producer a sagittariun sculptures out of the original a breakbeat house track, that sounds like a hidden treasure from this short but influential period.

nelistening back, ‘interlude’ will feel like the perfect opening to ‘skylax’. a jazzy encore crawls in, morphing into a skippy hip-hop instrumental with jason’s signature flourishes all over it. aptly named as it is, this is the breathing space between whatever came before in your day, and the eleven deep house gems that are to follow. speaking of, ‘the love’ will have you gripped from the first bar. it glides the listener in, then subtly drops that signature, tightly-tuned bassline of jason’s and continues onto soulful vocals from there. ‘old dayz’ touches on a bit of a nostalgic note. the spoken vox cuts harken back to 90s hip-hop joints, playing over a looped latin sample-led beat. from there, ‘rawkicks 2’ shows jason’s rough and ready sampling style in action. a seemingly simple track, but one which has that special something which guarantees to keep people on the floor moving for its duration. ‘cut b’ contrasts this nicely, being a much cleaner production with tight drum programming and synth work. that said, it still has the classic jg atmosphere we love. closing out the first half of the album, ‘definition’ slows the pace ever so slightly, with its eternal pad structure that builds up the track’s momentum into something very mellow and deep.bringing in the second half of ‘skylax’, ‘john blue’ takes things back a notch further. a deeper tune, yet one that shows off an uncharacteristically punchy bass hit from jason. ‘last night’ is a track more reminiscent of jason’s first lost cuts ep on wax classic, sounding as if it had been freshly taken off an old tape with its sample-led beat and background hiss. the last four tracks of the album see a return to the ‘mastercuts’ and ‘lovedits’ series which fans will recognize from the ‘lost cuts’ records, with ‘lovedits 7’ and ‘mastercut 5’ respectively. the former is a laid back female vocal edit with the entire suite of signature jg touches while the latter is a garage house hit more crafted for the club. ‘bb’ brings the album to a close, twisting a disco/funksample over a pallet of drums and effects for the near six-minute duration of the track.all in all, this is the perfect follow up to jason’s debut album ‘313.4.ever’, with tracks for both the club and home listening. if you happened to miss the first album back in 2012, don’t forget that now you have the chance to grab it in a special double pack with ‘skylax’ on cd!so, needless to say, this timeless record is a must purchase for all collectors and djs out there

argentinian dj and producer, ernesto ferreyra, provided cadenza with a rich and inspirational album back in 2010, the intricate and balanced el paraiso de las tortugas was a masterclass in minimal electronic dance. four years on, and ernesto returns to lucianos label with the insight single, and a precursor to another album for the label, slated for october release. voltage poem displays a huge progression for ernesto, a stomping, elastic backbeat, peppered with live percussion, shakers and micro glitches dances around the mechanical funk of the bassline.

russian producer sanys has impressed with a series of raw techno records on his downfall theory label - and his latest release further showcases his talents. dominance starts with atmospheric synth washes before a granular bass and relentless percussion propel it forward. like previous sanys releases however, this is not straightforward linear techno and a rumbling vocal and insistent drums will keep the listener engaged. my concern sees sanys opt for a different approach, with a pulsing bass and a crystalline synth line going up and down the scales, intertwined with a vocal snippet, while told you so features another stylistic shift. on this occasion, it s back to the darker sound that was audible on some of the earlier downfall theory releases. tight, snappy drums and robust, insistent claps provide the basis for a droning, murky bassline that cuts through the arrangement like a lighthouse rays in the dark of night. finally, irish producer eomac, one half of lakker, delivers a version of dominance that centres on lithe broken beats, ghostly melodies and insidious tonal shifts. as its title suggests, dominance shows sanys has become a master of the techno form.

four cuts on hurting might be the most appropriate title for this collection of tunes. heavy bassline tool techno in its purest form, for your sets.

rsvd kicks off with this blue knife ep by its main korova. blow out track reflects the full mentality of the label and comes with a thrilling tension stepping aside a bursting obscure dark progression and sinister heavy beats. alien blood is and ufo-like deadly bassline invasion drawing a dark strong hurting texture. deep waters original mix is a playful floor-killer techno jacking track. tsunami rocking upon and over the surface. its iys remix is fine rich and dry both mental dark stomping and odd hard hitting one: simple unique. a new excellent proof for the italian duo made by fusaroli and filardo.

the nixwax white label series continues our commitment to global warming by releasing limited slices of petrochemicals imprinted with noise. the a-side takes no nonsense and gets straight down to business with a catchy vocal hook and a powerful bassline that demonstrates nisse nilsons ability to fill a dancefloor and keep the punters hungry. on the flip-side, ojsmooth filters the elements of the track to their most arresting while keeping the warmth of the bassline front and centre. classic ojsmooth: all juice, no bits.

bulletdodges next instalment comes from us producer sean ray, delivering a single called deep 454 with 3 superb remixes from mgun, space djz & mr o and gareth whitehead. seans original track is a deep affair, heralding sparkling pads and grooving percussion. the track is cemented by a dark yet infectious piano riff and soulful bassline to make it a dancefloor classic. first up on remix duties is ur’s very own newcomer mgun. mgun has been taking the scene by storm lately with his incredible productions and his take on sean’s deep 454 is no exception. for this remix he has provided us with a detroit infused gem of a track. he has used soulful pads that eminate detroit and an upfront kick to create nothing short of a masterpiece. for the next remix we have an exciting collaboration between techno stalwarts space djz and one half of the detroit grand pubha’s mr o. their joint venture has produced a deep techno monster. it has a solid bassline and hypnotic use of the pads that shouts out 5am madness. lastly to remix deep 454 is bulletdodge’s head honcho gareth whitehead who has created a more old school stripped back deep house vibe. his tight drum programming and clever usage of the original tracks pads and piano riff rounds this perfect package off very nicely. supported so far by audio injection, colin dale, craig richards, dj deep, gary beck, paul mac, pig & dan, samuel l. session, sasha carassi, skream, slam, tom hades and vince watson plus many more!!!

over the course of four eps for numbers and creation of his own label ‘total fantasy’, deadboy has charted his own path far beyond the deep black space of mediocrity with previous records ‘if u want me’, ‘here’ & ‘blaquewerk’. on ‘return’ deadboy journeys further into uncharted territories, taking his music to the darkest recesses of disco and extraterrestrial synth-werk. the opening track ‘return’ finds the london-based producer taking cues from the likes of tangerine dream and klaus schulze with a gentle ambient opener that unwraps to reveal a beautiful and moving track. ‘des niles’ is a shimmering disco track built around an 80s boogie bassline, plus those killer deadboy vocal chop-ups that take us even deeper into the producers nighttime world. samples are worked to within an inch of their life on the floor-ready ‘yhvh’, whilst punchy bass and synth stabs take care of the rest. things then move swiftly on to ‘life code’, with the deadboy once again notching the tempo down and letting the track’s wistful oriental melodies ride out into the dark.

sometimes it is best to let the music do the talking, this is one of those occasions. local talks 46th release comes from exciting debutant sameed. little did we know about sameed before we got the four tracks for this 12 inch, for all we know it could be your neighbour. quick-firing the release is spend, functional as a set highlight with its dubby chords, vocal snippets and a wonky bassline. included on the b-side is a dub that will work perfect as a dj tool for those who want to go a little bit deeper. showcasing sameeds sense for keeping things stripped down and sweaty, still is a dirty exercise in acid witchcraft while getyoself can best be described as a delicately raw rhythm with dark textures.

two original tracks performaed by damaskin. mental and ambient techno, with soft bassline and dark atmosphere, this is the sound of damaskin, deep and weakness at the same time. on the other side a perfect techno remix of cassegrain duo, 7 minutes of a killer-dark-dancefloor-oriented track. limited to 200 copies world wide.

the legendary tony rohr graces phobiq with his presence and offers two tracks alongside his new partner-in-crime layton giordani. the ep starts out with the sparse arrangement of -careless suggestions-, driven by a locomotive bassline and grinding rhythm section. moody stabs reinforce the bleak vibe, and the vocals coming at us from otherworldly black holes only add to the mood. label boss sasha carassi steps up for the remix in his trademarked stomping style, making use of hypnotic elements and the busy claps from the original. industrial-sounding hi-hat action drives his interpretation all the way home, after an apocalyptic breakdown, of course. on -reggae shiz- things are more stripped-down with bare drums holding everything together, as the rest of the arsenal slowly builds around menacing chords and a rocksteady groove. behind the spotlight, liquid bass comes together with quirky percussion to complete this almost-10-minute-long opus. dema maintains a sublime, shadowy mood in his version but opts for busier hats and heavier usage of chords.

wolf music return with the second release on their new vinyl only offshoot, with two upfront peak time tracks. up first is creative swing alliance, a track that has been fully road tested by the wolf guys in the last few months with devastating effect. with cut up vocal snippets of everyones favourite diva, filtered stabs and a killer bassline, this is primed for the peaktime. on the flip lastest pack member thrilogy starts off on a subtler route after an early breakdown, the main rift takes the track up a gear with elements weaving in and out throughout, the drama constantly builds as you get drawn into the track.

it has been a while since jaxson & david keno have been on keno records but it was worth the wait. calippo is an absolute banger. driven by this oldschool deep bassline climaxing in a breakdown filled with detroit strings this track already rocked many dancefloors all over the world. oliver schories takes it down a notch, gets rid of the strings and takes it into a more melancholic direction but still very danceable. the remix from adrian martin pushes calippo even a bit more in the tech house direction.

latest iib release features the north easts version of csn last waltz. a double header, the first track just hold on is a collaboration between last waltz & smoove. heartfelt vocals over a pastoral rolling chugger, deep bassline folky guitar strumming making this a favourite at iib hq. on the remix ess o ess raise the tempo a little bring out the electric guitars and increasing the chug to almost krautrock levels. on the flip side last waltz give us tribute. a deep atmospheric acid affair. mellow electric keys and percussion lull you into a false sense of security before the heavy kick and acid bassline drop with dark cello notes. machete savane take on the remix. replacing acid for guitar and adding some machine groove this slowly builds and builds into a top bubbler.

after a decade of club singles spanning bassline house, garage, grime and more, dj q releases his debut album. although he has been releasing club tracks since the start of the 00s, dj q had his breakthrough moment in 2008 with *u wot*, one of the biggest tracks to come out of the uks bassline house / niche explosion. the years since have seen him hold down residencies on bbc radio 1xtra and ministry of sound radio, while releasing on butterz, unknown to the unknown and local action.

with *closer* masterton debuts on blackfoxmusics 19th release (bfm019). *closer* is a warm track with a deep groove and beautiful melodies. it relates to living in a long distance relationship and overcoming a lack of proximity.
robert babicz (babiczstyle, systematic, bedrock records) created an incredible remix. he used lots of the original melodies, combined them with new elements, added rolling drums and a thick bassline to give the track the extra drive. his remix became a constant part of his live sets and was debuted with great response at grelle forelle (vienna) and ritter butzke (berlin).
channel x (stil vor talent) remixed *closer* into a pretty cool and clubby deep house track. you can feel their berlin origin when listening to the groovy bassline with variations of the melody. finally the breaks capture the mood of the dissonant sounds from the original track.
